Special Lecture Oshkosh 2018

PHILIP GREENSPUN: There is no pizza for me because I'm going to talk about Oshkosh. So what is it? It's end of July every year at a big, a physically big, but otherwise not very busy airport in Wisconsin. And about 10,000 airplanes come in. People camp out. People hang out, usually at least 100,000 people a day. There's a Boeing. There's a C-17 cargo plane. A lot of experimental-- it's founded by the Experimental Aircraft Association. So there's a lot of people who are passionate about home-building there. You can see all the airplanes parked. There's 12,000 camping sites, 40,000 campers. There's 1,500 workshops and seminars that you can take to learn. Or you can just walk around and talk to people, and hang out. So I planned this trip for me and my friend Ray. Lec 4 MIT 4.125 Architecture Studio Building in Landscape

PROFESSOR: There are several mediums of working with students in the process of designing. There are desk-side crits. There are reviews. There are lectures. And there are pinups. In this studio, every week, a piece of the project is due, whether it be a model or a drawing. And we have what we call pin up, when all the students pin up their work and quickly explain what they are doing. And then I and other members of the class try to give comments on what they've seen to try to help to the next step. Because architecture is not just one step. It's a continual process that changes. Perhaps people have the idea that it comes all at once. It doesn't. It comes over a period of time. So the pin up is a very valuable part of that. Because it's giving students a feedback as to how they're moving. And slowly, adjustments are made for the next step. There was a little confusion with dideoxies in one sense, and some of these things like the PCR you're going to have to sort of sit down and actually think about it, but the principle of the dideoxies, if we were making a chain of beads that had a hook on one end and a little hole on the other, and we were joining these things together, we could make obviously, a chain that went on. And then we could hook another one in, and so on. And if we had a bunch of beads like this every now and then we threw in a very small number that didn't have the hook on the end, any time this particular chain were elongating and we put on one of these things, the chain would stop because you haven't got any where to join onto it. One announcement. There will be Quiz 9, the weekly quiz tomorrow based on the content of Homework 9 which is, I don't remember what it is, but you know what it is. I made it up, but I am already thinking about the next glorious event. Now I remember. There is chemical kinetics and glasses. That's right, chemical kinetics and amorphous solids. That's right. Last day we started talking about diffusion which is solid state mass transport by random atomic motion. And we were drawn to the paper that is up on the display which was published in 1855 by Adolf Fick which gave us the law that bears his name describing how matter diffuses through matter. Fick was a very talented individual, and I want to draw attention to something else. Remember, he was a physiologist. He actually did some work in medicine as well.
