Lec 7 MIT 4.125 Architecture Studio Building in Landscape

PROFESSOR: The other piece of teaching is giving talks. I'm not so sure I refer to them as lectures, but really talks about work. I bring in my own work that I've done in the form of slides, often, to explain particular ideas about architecture. Although there is no great knowledge that can be passed on, there are some ideas that you learn over the years that you can pass on. And the talks are a way of doing that. Today's talk about the space between buildings is a topic that interests me, and is very important for this particular project. So what you're about to see is a typical slide talk of which there are also, usually, about 10 during the semester on different subjects. At MIT, I teach studios, which obviously, this is one. But we also have a very unique thing, which are workshops, which I'm trying to actually make more available for undergraduates. I am the other half of the teaching team for 7.01. You've already gotten to meet my good colleague Bob Weinberg. My name is Eric Lander. And Bob and I are both faculty here in the Biology Department. In fact, we're both members over at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. In fact, we just spent the whole weekend together at the Whitehead Retreat. And so, Bob and I have been doing this course together for a number of years. And we very much love it. I am -- I'll take a brief moment and introduce myself, since I haven't had the opportunity to do so yet. I am by training, well, actually, I'm really a geneticist. By training I'm actually a pure mathematician. That was actually what my undergraduate degree was in, and even my PhD was in, but then wandered into biology. Lec 14 MIT 7.014 Introductory Biology, Spring 2005

There were some other questions sort of running along this general idea of the fact that the information in DNA doesn't go, even though it encodes the information for proteins goes via this rRNA intermediate. Someone asked what was the M. The M is for messenger. The idea being that since the DNA, at least in eukaryotes the DNA was in the nucleus and proteins were made out of the cytoplasm, somehow that information had to be carried from the nucleus where the DNA was out to the cytoplasm. And that's where the term messenger was because the RNA was seen as something that would carry the information out. Now, a point here, it's really critical because we're going to continue to talk about gene regulation. And that is when a cell is making one of these mRNAs, it doesn't make one single copy of all of the genes that are in the genome on one RNA. the other method we've used we're trying is uh seepage meters any of you guys familiar with secret meters did you work with uh emily and uh all too familiar with seafood meters uh you know basically it sort of makes sense when you think about it we're not interested in concentration as much as we are in flux total mass coming in per year amount of water and that's hard to measure in groundwater as you probably personally experienced okay so what they've come up with are these things called seepage meters uh david lee and a few others came out designed them uh first in canada some years ago and um the idea being that you find some sort of a way to have a funnel or something you can put on the pond bottom and the groundwater that would be discharging the leg goes through that first and you can capture it and measure the rate okay that's a wonderful i that's that's that's the simple explanation everything after that gets to be complicated ...
