Lecture 27 Visual System 2 Physiology (orig Ablation Effects); Neville Sanjana, Guest lecturer

NEVILLE SANJANA: So Jerry started the ablation studies of the visual system, and the reason why I'm not picking up where he left off is because Jerry is really the specialist in this. In fact, you'll see in our textbook that his work is cited, his 1969 paper is cited for some of the ablation that he did to the superior colliculus. It's classic work, so he really is the one to talk about that. Not only that, I don't do lesion studies, so another good reason for me not to. So I am like a physiologist, and I work mainly in the hippocampus, but hopefully that will transfer to the retina nicely for today. So this is today's topic, and Jerry had this kind of very large outline with lots of slides, so we're probably only going to talk about the retina, and maybe get to talk about the different cell types, the ganglion cell types, and I don't if everybody has done the reading or whatnot, but I'll try and introduce you, just starting with the eye, a...

Lecture 12 Spinal Cord; Autonomic NS

GERALD SCHNEIDER: OK, we started class 12 last time, and we're going to go back over what we covered at the end of the last hour. We're looking at spinal cord structure in a little more detail and then the autonomic nervous system. You can also read quite a bit about these things in your textbook. My way of presenting it is a little bit different from the textbook. I'll point out just a few differences. So these are the topics for today. So we'll look again at the formation of the neural tube from the embryonic ectoderm, the surface layer of the embryo, define what we mean by alar and basal plates, also the roof plate and the floor plate, the developing neural tube. And then we'll talk about neural crest cells as well. OK, so if we just take a section, a cross section, through the back of the developing embryo-- this would be true for all of the chordates, that the surface ectoderm above a structure called the notochord, which is just cartilage at this...

Allen Louviere started life as an airplane designer, went to Lamar University in Texas and then worked at General Dynamics in Fort Worth. You told me about the YB-57. I don't know what other planes you worked on up there, but -- Oh, B-58s, B-36s, F16s, F111s and B-57Fs. Then they wanted to send him all around the world and had a young family. And that was about the time that Johnson Space Center, which at that time was called the Manned Space Flight Center, was getting started in Houston in 1962. So, Allen came to work. And his specialty is mechanical systems. We had a little discussion last night about some of the things that he has designed, but for me one of the most amazing is the landing gear on the Lunar Module. I mean when you think that you can actually design the first piece of the hardware that touches down on another planet that's pretty exciting. And, like most of the people who have been lecturing, he went onto work in similar systems for the Shuttle....
