So my name is Penny Chisholm and I am a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with a joint appointment in biology and I'm a microbial ecologist. I'm an ecologist by training and I work on microbes in the oceans, photosynthetic plants in the oceans. They're called phytoplankton. That's the research that my lab does. Whenever I'm using examples in here, a lot of times I'll be using examples of microbes and of plants in the oceans. I know most people know a lot more about trees than they know about things that photosynthesize in the oceans. And I'll convince you that you should be as bonded to phytoplankton as you are to trees in terms of recognizing your dependency on them. So that's just a little bit about my background.
